Health benefits include:
- Males – Removes any risk of testicular cancer and greatly reduces the risk of benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH). Tends to reduce hormone-driven aggressive behaviors and the urge to roam the neighborhood, and makes them less likely to mark territory by urinating on carpets and furniture.
- Females – They will no longer go into heat or menstruate, and are at less risk of reproductive organ and breast cancers. It also eliminates the risks of a life-threatening uterine infection called “Pyometra.” It will also stop the howling and crying common to the heat cycle.
The Procedure
The night before the spay or neuter procedure is scheduled your pet should not consume anything but water after about 10 PM. When you arrive for your appointment, your vet will sedate your pet and intubate them with a catheter, then perform the surgery. Afterward, they’ll rest in a recovery room for observation for a couple of hours, and then you’ll be able to take them home. You’ll need to make sure they take it easy indoors for a couple of weeks and take steps to keep them from scratching and biting at their sutures and reopening them.
